एवम् उक्तः तु सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना ।
हनूमन्तम् स्थितम् पार्श्वे वचनम् च इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥४-३७-१॥
evam uktaḥ tu sugrīvo lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā । hanūmantam sthitam pārśve vacanam ca idam abravīt ॥ ॥4-37-1॥
Translation
Thus addressed by the high-souled Lakshmana, Sugriva spoke these words to Hanuman, who was standing by his side.

महात्मा लक्ष्मण के द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, सुग्रीव ने अपने बगल में खड़े हनुमान जी से यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse marks a pivotal shift in Sugriva's demeanor. The use of the honorific "Mahatmana" (high-souled) for Lakshmana indicates that despite the harsh rebuke he just received, Sugriva recognizes Lakshmana's moral authority and the righteousness of his anger. Sugriva does not argue or make excuses; instead, he immediately pivots to action. Turning to Hanuman, who is described as standing by his side (parshve sthitam), signifies the deep trust Sugriva places in him. In moments of crisis, a king turns to his most capable minister. This action initiates the massive mobilization of the Vanara army, moving the narrative from the static inaction of Kishkindha to dynamic preparation for war.

लक्ष्मण जी के क्रोध और चेतावनी ने सुग्रीव की तंद्रा भंग कर दी थी। यहाँ 'महात्मना' शब्द लक्ष्मण के लिए प्रयोग किया गया है, जो दर्शाता है कि कठोर वचन बोलने के बाद भी सुग्रीव लक्ष्मण के प्रति सम्मान रखते हैं और यह समझते हैं कि लक्ष्मण का क्रोध धर्मसम्मत है। सुग्रीव ने तुरंत स्थिति की गंभीरता को समझा और बिना किसी विलंब के अपने सबसे विश्वसनीय मंत्री, हनुमान जी की ओर रुख किया। यह श्लोक एक राजा की त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया को दर्शाता है जो अपनी गलती सुधारने के लिए तत्पर है। सुग्रीव जानते थे कि वानर सेना को एकत्र करने का विशाल कार्य केवल हनुमान जैसा बुद्धिमान और शक्तिशाली मंत्री ही कुशलता से कर सकता है, इसलिए उन्होंने सीधे उन्हें संबोधित किया।
