फल मूलेन जीवन्तो हिमवन्तम् उपाश्रिताः ।
तेषाम् कोटि सहस्राणाम् सहस्रम् समवर्तत ॥४-३७-२३॥
phala mūlena jīvanto himavantam upāśritāḥ |
teṣām koṭi sahasrāṇām sahasram samavartata ॥4-37-23॥
Translation
Living on fruits and roots and dwelling in the Himalayas, a thousand "thousand-crores" of such monkeys assembled.

फल और मूल पर जीवन निर्वाह करने वाले तथा हिमालय का आश्रय लेकर रहने वाले वानरों की एक हज़ार 'हज़ार करोड़' (अर्थात 10 नील) सेना एकत्र हुई।
English Commentary
This verse characterizes the Vanaras of the Himalayas (Himavantam) by their diet and habitat. "Phala mūlena jīvanto" (subsisting on fruits and roots) implies a natural, perhaps ascetic, strength derived from the pristine environment. The numerical figure "thousand of thousand crores" is staggering, meant to convey an infinite, uncountable sea of warriors. It demonstrates that Sugriva's command reached the most remote and rugged terrains, pulling reclusive mountain tribes into the mainstream military effort for the impending war.

हिमालय क्षेत्र के वानरों का यह वर्णन उनकी सात्विक जीवन शैली को दिखाता है—वे 'फल-मूल खाने वाले' हैं। हिमालय की कंदराओं में रहने वाले ये वानर अत्यंत संयमी और शक्तिशाली होते हैं। यहाँ संख्या का परिमाण और बढ़ गया है—'कोटि सहस्राणाम् सहस्रम्' (हजार करोड़ का एक हजार गुना)। यह अतिशयोक्ति नहीं बल्कि वाल्मीकि जी द्वारा वानर सेना की व्यापकता का दिग्दर्शन है। सुग्रीव का आदेश इतना प्रभावशाली था कि सुदूर हिमालय के एकांतवासी वानर भी राम काज के लिए आ गए।
