ततः कांचन आभो गवयो नाम यूथपः ।
आजगाम महावीर्यः कोटिभिः पंचभिः वृतः ॥ ॥४-३९-२३॥
tataḥ kāñcana ābho gavayo nāma yūthapaḥ । ājagāma mahāvīryaḥ koṭibhiḥ pañcabhiḥ vṛtaḥ ॥ ॥4-39-23॥
Translation
Thereafter, the commander named Gavaya, possessing a golden splendor and great valor, arrived surrounded by five crores of Vanaras.

तदनन्तर, सोने जैसी आभा वाले, महावीर्यवान 'गवय' नाम के यूथप पांच करोड़ वानरों से घिरे हुए आ पहुंचे।
English Commentary
Gavaya arrives next, distinguished by his "golden luster" (Kanchana Abha). He commands five crores of troops. It is important to distinguish him from Gavaksha (mentioned in Verse 19). The name "Gavaya" is traditionally associated with the Gayal or wild ox, implying immense strength and a sturdy build. The contrasting descriptions of the commanders—some blue like Nila, some golden like Gavaya and Sushena—paint a vivid picture of a diverse and colorful assembly. Gavaya is a mighty warrior who fights valiantly in the Lanka war, and his contribution of five crore troops adds significant bulk to the army.

'गवय' नाम के यूथप का वर्णन यहाँ किया गया है। इन्हें गवाक्ष से भिन्न समझना चाहिए। गवय का रंग 'कांचन आभः' (स्वर्ण के समान) है, जो उन्हें नील (काले रंग) से अलग करता है। वानर सेना में रंगों की यह विविधता दृश्य को अत्यंत मनोहर बनाती है। गवय पांच करोड़ वानरों का नेतृत्व करते हैं। वन में 'गवय' एक जंगली पशु (नीलगाय जैसा) होता है, संभवतः इस वानर वीर का नाम उनके भारी शरीर और शक्ति के कारण रखा गया हो। वे भी राम के कार्य के लिए अपनी विशाल सेना के साथ उत्साहपूर्वक उपस्थित हुए हैं।
