न चिरात् तम् हनिष्यामि रावणम् निशितैः शरैः ।
पौलोम्याः पितरम् दृप्तम् शत क्रतुः इव अरिहा ॥ ॥४-३९-७॥
Na cirāt tam haniṣyāmi rāvaṇam niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ |
Paulomyāḥ pitaram dṛptam śata kratuḥ iva arihā ॥4-39-7॥
Translation
I shall kill that Ravana with my sharp arrows before long, just as Indra (Shatakratu), the destroyer of foes, killed the arrogant father of Paulomi (Puloman).
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं शीघ्र ही अपने तीखे बाणों से उस रावण को मार डालूँगा, जैसे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले शतक्रतु (इन्द्र) ने पौलोमी (शची) के गर्विष्ठ पिता (पुलोमन) का वध किया था।
English Commentary
Rama vows to slay Ravana using a potent simile. He likens himself to Indra (Shatakratu - he who has performed 100 sacrifices) killing Puloman, the father of his own wife Shachi. Puloman was arrogant (Driptam) and was struck down by Indra. This emphasizes Rama's prowess as Ariha (slayer of enemies). The specificity of "sharp arrows" (Nishitaih sharaih) brings the focus back to Rama's martial skill. It signals the end of the planning phase and the beginning of the execution phase.

यहाँ एक और उपमा है। शची के पिता पुलोमन ने अपनी पुत्री के विवाह के संदर्भ में या अन्य विरोध के कारण इन्द्र से शत्रुता की थी, और इन्द्र ने उसका वध किया था। राम अपनी तुलना इन्द्र ('शतक्रतु') से करते हैं। 'दृप्तम्' (घमंडी) शब्द रावण के लिए प्रयोग किया गया है। राम स्पष्ट करते हैं कि युद्ध व्यक्तिगत प्रतिशोध और धर्म की स्थापना दोनों के लिए है। 'न चिरात्' (बिना देरी के/शीघ्र) यह दर्शाता है कि वानर सेना के आने से राम अब युद्ध के लिए तत्पर हैं।
