दिशः पर्याकुलाः च आसन् तमसा तेन दूषिताः ।
चचाल च मही सर्वा स शैल वन कानना ॥ ॥४-३९-९॥
Diśaḥ paryākulāḥ ca āsan tamasā tena dūṣitāḥ |
Cacāla ca mahī sarvā sa śaila vana kānanā ॥4-39-9॥
Translation
The directions became confused/obscured, polluted by that darkness. The entire earth, along with its mountains, forests, and groves, began to shake.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस अंधकार (धूल) से दूषित होकर सभी दिशाएं व्याकुल (धुंधली) हो गईं। पर्वतों, वनों और काननों सहित पूरी पृथ्वी कांपने लगी।
English Commentary
The sensory description intensifies. First the sky was covered, now the directions are obscured (Paryakulah), creating a sense of chaos and overwhelming presence. The physical impact is felt as the earth shakes (Cachala mahi). Mentioning that mountains and forests shook along with the earth emphasizes that this is a total mobilizaton of the wild. The very geography seems to be vibrating with the energy of Sugriva's forces.
हिंदी टीका
वानर सेना का आगमन किसी भूकंप से कम नहीं है। 'चचाल च मही' (पृथ्वी कांपने लगी) सेना के भारी भरकम कदमों और उनकी संख्या का सूचक है। दिशाओं का 'पर्याकुल' होना मतलब चारों तरफ इतनी भीड़ और धूल है कि पूर्व-पश्चिम का ज्ञान नहीं हो रहा। यह वर्णन शत्रु के मन में भय उत्पन्न करने वाला है। वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ अतिशयोक्ति (Hyperbole) का प्रयोग करते हैं ताकि पाठक उस क्षण की भव्यता को महसूस कर सकें।
