अहम अस्य अवरः भ्राता गुणैः दास्यम् उपागतः ।
कृतज्ञस्य बहुज्ञस्य लक्ष्मणो नाम नामतः ॥ ॥४-४-१२॥
Aham asya avaraḥ bhrātā guṇaiḥ dāsyam upāgataḥ । Kṛtajñasya bahu jñasya lakṣmaṇo nāma nāmataḥ ॥ ॥4-4-12॥
Translation
I am his younger brother. I have been enslaved by his virtues. By name, I am Lakshmana, the brother of this grateful and all-knowing Rama.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं इनका छोटा भाई हूँ। मैं इनके गुणों के कारण इनका दास बन गया हूँ। इन कृतज्ञ और बहुज्ञ (सब कुछ जानने वाले) श्री राम का मैं 'लक्ष्मण' नाम का भाई हूँ।
English Commentary
This is one of the most celebrated verses in the Ramayana. Lakshmana defines his loyalty not by blood, but by merit. The phrase 'guṇaiḥ dāsyam upāgataḥ' (enslaved by his virtues) indicates that his servitude is voluntary and inspired by Rama's moral excellence. He describes Rama as 'Kṛtajña' (grateful) and 'Bahujña' (wise/all-knowing). This is a subtle signal to Hanuman: allying with Rama is safe and rewarding because Rama never forgets a good deed (gratitude) and understands all situations (wisdom).

यह रामायण के सबसे प्रसिद्ध श्लोकों में से एक है। लक्ष्मण अपने समर्पण का कारण रक्त संबंध नहीं, बल्कि राम के गुण बताते हैं। 'गुणैः दास्यम् उपागतः' (गुणों ने मुझे दास बना लिया है) कहकर लक्ष्मण स्पष्ट करते हैं कि राम का व्यक्तित्व इतना महान है कि उनकी सेवा करना कोई मजबूरी नहीं, बल्कि सौभाग्य है। वे राम को 'कृतज्ञ' (उपकार मानने वाला) और 'बहुज्ञ' (ज्ञानी) कहते हैं। यह हनुमान को आश्वस्त करता है कि राम की सेवा करने वाला कभी खाली हाथ नहीं रहता, क्योंकि वे कृतज्ञ हैं।
