Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एष दत्त्वा च वित्तानि प्राप्य च अनुत्तमम् यशः ।
लोकनाथः पुरा भूत्वा सुग्रीवम् नाथम् इच्छति ॥ ॥४-४-१८॥
Eṣa dattvā ca vittāni prāpya ca anuttamam yaśaḥ । Lokanāthaḥ purā bhūtvā sugrīvam nātham icchati ॥ ॥4-4-18॥
Translation
He who previously gave away wealth and attained unsurpassed fame; he who was formerly the Lord of the World, now desires Sugriva as a lord (protector/helper).
हिंदी अनुवाद
ये (राम) जो पहले प्रचुर धन दान करते थे और जिन्होंने सर्वोच्च यश प्राप्त किया था; जो पहले 'लोकनाथ' (संसार के रक्षक/स्वामी) थे, वे आज सुग्रीव को अपना 'नाथ' (रक्षक/सहायक) बनाना चाहते हैं।
English Commentary
This is a profoundly emotional and antithetical verse. Lakshmana contrasts Rama's past with his present necessity. The one who was 'Lokanāthaḥ' (Lord of the World) now seeks Sugriva as 'Nātham' (protector/support). This wordplay is designed to melt Hanuman’s heart and highlight the power of destiny (Kala). It frames the request not just as a need, but as an honor for Sugriva—that a man of such stature is asking for his help. This emotional appeal solidifies the foundation for the impending alliance.

यह सर्ग 4 का एक अत्यंत भावुक और विरोधाभासी (Antithetical) श्लोक है। लक्ष्मण तुलना करते हैं कि राम 'क्या थे' और 'अब क्या हैं'। जो 'लोकनाथ' (जगत् के स्वामी) थे, वे अब सुग्रीव को 'नाथ' (स्वामी/सहारा) बनाना चाहते हैं। यह शब्द-चयन हनुमान के हृदय को पिघलाने के लिए है। यह नियति का खेल है। लक्ष्मण यह जता रहे हैं कि समय कितना बलवान है। यह निवेदन सुग्रीव के लिए सम्मान की बात है कि भगवान राम उनसे सहायता मांग रहे हैं। इसी भावनात्मक आधार पर राम-सुग्रीव मैत्री की नींव रखी जा रही है।
