किम् अर्थम् त्वम् वनम् घोरम् पम्पा कानन मण्डितम् ।
आगतः सानुजो दुर्गम् नाना व्याल मृग आयुतम् ॥ ॥४-४-४॥
Kim artham tvam vanam ghoram pampā kānana maṇḍitam । Āgataḥ sānujo durgam nānā vyāla mṛga āyutam ॥ ॥4-4-4॥
Translation
For what purpose have you come with your younger brother to this terrifying forest, adorned with the Pampa woods, yet difficult to traverse and filled with various beasts and predators?

आप अपने छोटे भाई के साथ इस घोर वन में, जो पम्पा सरोवर के वनों से सुशोभित है, तथा जो नाना प्रकार के हिंसक जीवों और मृगों से भरा हुआ है, किस प्रयोजन से आए हैं?
English Commentary
Although Lakshmana had already hinted that they were seeking Sugriva, Hanuman seeks a formal introduction and backstory. This is proper protocol. He asks why princes of such delicate features have entered this 'ghoram' (terrifying) and 'durgam' (impenetrable) forest. By mentioning 'vyāla' (predators/snakes), Hanuman emphasizes that this terrain is suited for warriors, not ascetics. This question provides Rama and Lakshmana the opening to narrate their full lineage and mission, which will solidify the foundation of trust between them.
