न द्वेष्टा विद्यते तस्य स तु द्वेष्टि न कंचन ।
स तु सर्वेषु भूतेषु पितामह इव अपरः ॥ ॥४-४-७॥
Na dveṣṭā vidyate tasya sa tu dveṣṭi na kañcana । Sa tu sarveṣu bhūteṣu pitāmaha iva aparaḥ ॥ ॥4-4-7॥
Translation
There was no one who hated him, nor did he hate anyone. He was to all living beings like a second Pitamaha (Brahma, the Creator).

न तो उनका (दशरथ का) कोई द्वेषी था और न ही वे किसी से द्वेष करते थे। वे समस्त प्राणियों के लिए दूसरे पितामह (ब्रह्मा) के समान थे।
English Commentary
Lakshmana describes the ideal character of his father, King Dasharatha. The phrase "no one hated him, nor did he hate anyone" signifies that he was an Ajatashatru (one without enemies). Comparing him to a "second Brahma" (Pitamaha) implies that just as the Creator cares for all beings impartially, Dasharatha ruled without prejudice. This simile highlights his universal benevolence and paternalistic kingship. By establishing the greatness of the father, Lakshmana implicitly elevates the stature of the son, Rama, suggesting that he inherits these divine qualities of leadership and compassion.

लक्ष्मण यहाँ अपने पिता राजा दशरथ के आदर्श चरित्र का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। 'न द्वेष्टा विद्यते' का अर्थ है कि वे अजातशत्रु थे। यह एक राजा की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि है कि प्रजा उससे प्रेम करे और वह प्रजा से। उन्हें 'पितामह इव अपरः' (दूसरे ब्रह्मा के समान) कहना यह दर्शाता है कि जैसे ब्रह्मा सृष्टि के सभी जीवों का समान रूप से पालन करते हैं, वैसे ही दशरथ भी बिना किसी भेदभाव के न्याय और पालन करते थे। यह उपमा उनकी निष्पक्षता और वात्सल्य को रेखांकित करती है। राम ऐसे महान पिता के पुत्र हैं, यह बताकर लक्ष्मण राम की पृष्ठभूमि की गरिमा स्थापित कर रहे हैं।
