ज्ञायताम् सौम्य वैदेही यदि जीवति वा न वा ।
स च देशो महाप्राज्ञ यस्मिन् वसति रावणः ॥ ॥४-४०-११॥
jñāyatām saumya vaidehī yadi jīvati vā na vā |
sa ca deśo mahāprājña yasmin vasati rāvaṇaḥ ॥4-40-11॥
Translation
O Gentle one, find out whether Vaidehi (Sita) is alive or not; and O Wise one, find out that region where Ravana resides.

हे सौम्य! पता लगाइए कि वैदेही (सीता) जीवित हैं या नहीं, और हे महाप्राज्ञ! उस देश का भी पता लगाइए जहाँ रावण निवास करता है।
English Commentary
Rama adopts a painfully realistic and practical approach here. Despite his agony, he confronts the grim possibility regarding Sita's safety, asking first if she is "alive or not." This reflects his deep human anxiety. He addresses Sugriva as Mahāprājña (O very wise one), acknowledging that locating a hidden enemy requires not just brute force but sharp intelligence and geographical knowledge. It is a clear directive for reconnaissance before any military action can be taken.

राम यहाँ बहुत ही यथार्थवादी और व्यावहारिक दृष्टिकोण अपना रहे हैं। विरह की वेदना में भी वे सत्य को नकार नहीं रहे हैं—उनका पहला प्रश्न है "क्या वह जीवित है?" यह उनकी मानवीय पीड़ा और भय को दर्शाता है। वे सुग्रीव को 'महाप्राज्ञ' (अत्यंत बुद्धिमान) कहते हैं क्योंकि किसी छिपे हुए शत्रु के स्थान और स्थिति का पता लगाने के लिए केवल बल नहीं, बल्कि तीक्ष्ण बुद्धि की आवश्यकता है। यह "खोज और टोह" (search and reconnaissance) का आदेश है।
