देश काल नयैः युक्तः विज्ञः कार्य विनिश्चये ।
वृतः शत सहस्रेण वानराणाम् तरस्विनाम् ॥४-४०-१८॥
deśa kāla nayaiḥ yuktaḥ vijñaḥ kārya viniścaye । vṛtaḥ śata sahasreṇa vānarāṇām tarasvinām ॥4-40-18॥
Translation
Endowed with the knowledge of place, time, and polity, and wise in determining what ought to be done, you (Vinata) are surrounded by a hundred thousand swift and powerful Vanaras.
हिंदी अनुवाद
देश, काल और नीति के ज्ञान से युक्त तथा कर्तव्य का निश्चय करने में निपुण (विनत), तुम एक लाख वेगवान वानरों से घिरे हो (अर्थात् उनका नेतृत्व करो)।
English Commentary
In this verse, Sugriva addresses Vinata, highlighting the requisite qualities of a military commander entrusted with a critical mission. By describing him as knowledgeable in Desha (place/geography), Kala (time/season), and Naya (polity/strategy), Sugriva emphasizes that brute force alone is insufficient for this task. Vinata is described as capable of making decisive judgments (karya vinishcaye). The mention of 'one hundred thousand' (shata sahasrena) swift Vanaras underscores the magnitude of the eastern expedition. This verse serves as both an authorization of command and a reminder of the heavy responsibility Vinata bears to lead his troops with wisdom and strategic foresight.

यहाँ सुग्रीव अपने सेनापति विनत की प्रशंसा और योग्यता का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। किसी भी सैन्य अभियान की सफलता के लिए सेनापति का देश (स्थान), काल (समय) और नय (नीति) का ज्ञाता होना अनिवार्य है। सुग्रीव विनत को यह स्मरण दिलाते हैं कि वे केवल बलशाली ही नहीं, बल्कि बुद्धिमान भी हैं, जो संकट के समय उचित निर्णय लेने में सक्षम हैं। 'शत सहस्रेण' (एक लाख) वानरों का उल्लेख उस विशाल सेना की ओर संकेत करता है जो पूर्व दिशा की ओर प्रस्थान करने वाली है। यह श्लोक नेतृत्व के गुणों को रेखांकित करता है—एक सच्चा नेता वह है जो न केवल शक्ति रखता हो, बल्कि जिसे कूटनीति और परिस्थिति का भी पूर्ण ज्ञान हो।
