कर्ण प्रावरणाः चैव तथा च अपि ओष्ठ कर्णकाः ।
घोर लोह मुखाः चैव जवनाः च एक पादकाः ॥४-४०-२६॥
karṇa prāvaraṇāḥ caiva tathā ca api oṣṭha karṇakāḥ । ghora loha mukhāḥ caiva javanāḥ ca eka pādakāḥ ॥4-40-26॥
Translation
Search among the Karna-pravaranas (those who use ears as covering), the Ostha-karnakas (those with ears extending to lips), the Ghora-loha-mukhas (those with terrible iron-like faces), and the swift Eka-padakas (one-footed beings).

(वहाँ) कानों को ओढ़ने वाले (कर्ण प्रावरण), होठों तक लटकते कानों वाले (ओष्ठ कर्णक), लोहे जैसे भयानक मुख वाले (लोह मुख), और एक पैर वाले तेज दौडने वाले (एक पादक) लोगों को भी ढूँढो (या उनके क्षेत्रों में जाओ)।
English Commentary
This verse enters the realm of the exotic and the mythical, describing tribes at the edge of the known world. The Karna-pravaranas (blanket-eared) and Ostha-karnakas (lip-eared) are standard tropes in ancient Indian geographical texts (and even Greek accounts like Megasthenes) to describe distant, alien peoples. Loha-mukha (iron-faced) could imply people with dark complexions, strong jaws, or warriors wearing metallic masks/armor. Eka-padakas (one-footed men) are legendary swift beings. Sugriva prepares his army for encounters with the bizarre, signalling that they are leaving the civilized Aryavarta and entering wild, unchartered territories where the rules of normal engagement might not apply.
