तम् काल मेघ प्रतिमम् महोरग निषेवितम् ।
अभिगम्य महानादम् तीर्थेन एव महोदधिम् ॥४-४०-३८॥
tam kāla megha pratimam mahoraga niṣevitam । abhigamya mahānādam tīrthena eva mahodadhim ॥4-40-38॥
Translation
Approaching that great ocean, which is dark like the clouds of dissolution, inhabited by great serpents, and resounding with a loud noise, enter it only through a safe passage/ford.

प्रलयकाल के बादलों के समान काले, बड़े साँपों (महोरग) से सेवित और भारी गर्जना करने वाले उस महासागर को किसी घाट (तीर्थ) या सुरक्षित मार्ग से ही पार करना।
English Commentary
The ocean is visually described as Kala-megha-pratimam (resembling dark/doomsday clouds), suggesting deep, dark waters, possibly the open Pacific. It is infested with Mahoragas (great serpents/sea monsters). The crucial tactical instruction here is Tirthena eva—to access or cross the ocean only via established fords, landing places, or safe passages. Sugriva warns against reckless entry into these waters. The loud roaring (Mahanadam) further emphasizes the chaotic energy of this zone. The imagery combines physical danger (waves, depth) with biological threats (giant serpents), necessitating a calculated approach.
