Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत्र चन्द्र प्रतीकाशम् पन्नगम् धरणी धरम् ।
पद्म पत्र विशालाक्षम् ततो द्रक्ष्यध वानराः ॥ ॥४-४०-५१॥
Tatra candra pratīkāśam pannagam dharaṇī dharam । Padma patra viśālākṣam tato drakṣyadha vānarāḥ ॥ ॥4-40-51॥
Translation
There, O Vanaras, you shall see the serpent who supports the earth (Dharanidhara), who is radiant like the moon and whose eyes are as large as lotus petals.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वानरों! वहाँ तुम उस 'धरणीधर' (पृथ्वी को धारण करने वाले) नाग को देखोगे, जो चंद्रमा के समान उज्ज्वल है और जिसके नेत्र कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान विशाल हैं।
English Commentary
Here, the Vanaras are promised a vision of Ananta Shesha, the cosmic serpent. He is titled Dharanidhara, the upholder of the earth. The description establishes his iconography: he is white/shining like the moon (unlike the usual dark depiction of snakes, highlighting his divinity) and has large, lotus-like eyes, indicating benevolence and awareness. Meeting Shesha is a climax in their journey, as they are now in the presence of the being who stabilizes the very ground they walk on.

यह श्लोक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यहाँ अनंत शेषनाग के दर्शन का वर्णन है। उन्हें 'धरणीधर' कहा गया है, क्योंकि पौराणिक मान्यता है कि पृथ्वी शेषनाग के फन पर टिकी है। उनका रंग 'चन्द्र प्रतीकाशम्' (चंद्रमा जैसा श्वेत) बताया गया है, जो सत्व गुण और शांति का प्रतीक है। उनकी आँखें 'पद्म पत्र' (कमल के पत्तों) जैसी विशाल और सुंदर हैं। यह भगवान विष्णु के तामसी स्वरूप (संकर्षण) का वर्णन है जो प्रलय के समय भी विद्यमान रहते हैं।
