Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत्र वैखानसा नाम वालखिल्या महर्षयः ।
प्रकाशमाना दृश्यन्ते सूर्य वर्णाः तपस्विनः ॥ ॥४-४०-६०॥
Tatra vaikhānasā nāma vālakhilyā maharṣayaḥ । Prakāśamānā dṛśyante sūrya varṇāḥ tapasvinaḥ ॥ ॥4-40-60॥
Translation
There, the great sages known as Vaikhanasas and Valakhilyas are seen. These ascetics shine with a brilliance resembling the sun itself.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वहाँ 'वैखानस' और 'वालखिल्य' नाम के महर्षिगण दिखाई देते हैं। वे तपस्वी सूर्य के समान रंग वाले (तेजस्वी) हैं और प्रकाशमान रहते हैं।
English Commentary
The peak is inhabited by specific classes of sages: the Vaikhanasas and the Valakhilyas. In mythology, Valakhilyas are thumb-sized ascetics, numbering sixty thousand, who surround the Sun’s chariot and protect the universe from its overwhelming heat through their prayers. Describing them as "sun-colored" (Surya varnah) signifies their spiritual evolution; they have absorbed the qualities of the solar deity they worship. This indicates to the Vanaras that the region is populated by beings of immense spiritual power, not just wild beasts.

सौमनस शिखर केवल भौगोलिक संरचना नहीं है, बल्कि सिद्धों का निवास भी है। यहाँ 'वालखिल्य' ऋषियों का उल्लेख है, जो अंगूठे के आकार के (अत्यंत छोटे) माने जाते हैं और जिनकी संख्या 60,000 बताई जाती है। वे सूर्य के रथ के साथ चलते हैं और उसकी स्तुति करते हैं। 'वैखानस' ऋषि भी अत्यंत पवित्र माने जाते हैं। उनका वर्ण 'सूर्य वर्णाः' (सूर्य जैसा) है, जिसका अर्थ है कि निरंतर सूर्य के समीप रहने और तपस्या करने के कारण उनका शरीर भी तेज पुंज बन गया है।
