Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अयम् सुदर्शनो द्वीपः पुरो यस्य प्रकाशते ।
तस्मिन् तेजः च चक्षुः च सर्व प्राणभृताम् अपि ॥ ॥४-४०-६१॥
Ayam sudarśano dvīpaḥ puro yasya prakāśate । Tasmin tejaḥ ca cakṣuḥ ca sarva prāṇabhṛtām api ॥ ॥4-40-61॥
Translation
This is Sudarshana Dvipa (Jambu Dvipa), which shines in front of him (the Sun). In him (the Sun) resides the brilliance and the vision of all living beings.

यह 'सुदर्शन द्वीप' (जम्बूद्वीप) है जो इस (सूर्य) के सामने प्रकाशित होता है। उस (सूर्य) में ही सभी प्राणियों का तेज और नेत्रों की ज्योति स्थित है।
English Commentary
Sugriva refers to the inhabited world (Jambu Dvipa) as Sudarshana Dvipa (The Beautiful Island/Continent). He explains the causal link between the Sun and life: the Sun illuminates the world, and furthermore, the metaphysical "light" or vision within all living beings is derived from the Sun. This reflects the Vedic concept of the Sun (Surya) as the soul of the universe (Surya atma jagatah tasthushascha). It reminds the Vanaras that they are standing at the source of all vision and vitality.

यहाँ 'सुदर्शन द्वीप' का प्रयोग जम्बूद्वीप (पृथ्वी) के लिए किया गया है क्योंकि यह देखने में सुंदर (सुदर्शन) है, या इसका आकार चक्र जैसा है। श्लोक का भाव यह है कि जब सूर्य उदय पर्वत पर आता है, तो पूरी पृथ्वी प्रकाशित हो उठती है। दार्शनिक रूप से, सुग्रीव कहते हैं कि प्राणियों की आँखों में जो देखने की शक्ति (चक्षु) है और जो प्राण-शक्ति (तेज) है, वह सब सूर्य का ही अंश है। सूर्य केवल प्रकाश का गोला नहीं, बल्कि समस्त जीवन का स्रोत है।
