Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पूर्वम् एतत् कृतम् द्वारम् पृथिव्या भुवनस्य च ।
सूर्यस्य उदयनम् चैव पूर्वा हि एषा दिक् उच्यते ॥ ॥४-४०-६४॥
Pūrvam etat kṛtam dvāram pṛthivyā bhuvanasya ca । Sūryasya udayanam caiva pūrvā hi eṣā dik ucyate ॥ ॥4-40-64॥
Translation
This has been established as the first gateway of the earth and the world. And because it is the place of the Sun's rising, this direction is indeed called "Purva" (The East/The First).

यह (स्थान) पृथ्वी और संसार का 'पूर्व' (पहला/मुख्य) द्वार बनाया गया है। चूँकि यहाँ सूर्य का उदय होता है, इसीलिए इस दिशा को 'पूर्व' कहा जाता है।
English Commentary
This verse acts as a definitive concluding statement for the East. Sugriva explains the etymology of the direction. "Purva" means "first," "front," or "ancient." This location is the "First Gate" (Purvam Dvaram) of the world because the day begins here. It defines the orientation of the entire world; the cardinal directions are anchored by this point of sunrise. It underscores the primacy of the East in Hindu culture and geography.

यहाँ 'पूर्व' शब्द की व्युत्पत्ति (Etymology) बताई गई है। 'पूर्व' का अर्थ होता है 'पहला' या 'सामने वाला'। सुग्रीव कहते हैं कि यह स्थान संसार का 'मुख्य द्वार' है। जैसे घर में प्रवेश मुख्य द्वार से होता है, वैसे ही संसार में प्रकाश का प्रवेश यहीं से होता है। यह सृष्टि का आरंभिक बिंदु है, इसलिए इसे 'पूर्व' दिशा कहते हैं। यह श्लोक पूर्व दिशा के वर्णन का उपसंहार (conclusion) करता है, यह स्थापित करते हुए कि यह दिशा अन्य सभी दिशाओं में प्रधान है।
