रोहिता नाम गंधर्वा घोरम् रक्षन्ति तद् वनम् ।
तत्र गंधर्व पतयः पंच सूर्य सम प्रभाः ॥ ॥४-४१-४२॥
Rohitā nāma Gandharvā ghoram rakṣanti tad vanam । Tatra Gandharva patayaḥ pañca sūrya sama prabhāḥ ॥ ॥4-41-42॥
Translation
Gandharvas named Rohita fiercely guard that forest. There are five lords of the Gandharvas there, who shine with the brilliance of the sun.

रोहित नामक गंधर्व उस वन की भयंकर रूप से रक्षा करते हैं। वहां पांच गंधर्व-राज (पति) रहते हैं जो सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी हैं।
English Commentary
This verse explains the rationale behind the prohibition in the previous verse. The sandalwood forest is under the protection of the Rohita Gandharvas. Gandharvas are celestial beings often associated with nature and the arts, but here they function as fierce guardians ('ghoram rakshanti'). They are led by five lords ('gandharva patayah') whose radiance rivals the sun. Engaging with them over sandalwood would be a disastrous distraction. Sugriva is guiding his troops to navigate through territories of powerful supernatural entities without provoking conflict, ensuring the focus remains entirely on the search for Sita.

पिछले श्लोक में चंदन को न छूने का जो आदेश दिया गया था, उसका कारण यहाँ स्पष्ट किया गया है। उस वन की रक्षा 'रोहित' नामक गंधर्व करते हैं। गंधर्वों को संगीत और युद्ध कला में निपुण माना जाता है। यहाँ वे 'घोरम् रक्षन्ति' (भयंकर रूप से रक्षा करते हैं) करते हुए बताए गए हैं। उनके पांच स्वामी (नेता) हैं, जिनका तेज सूर्य के समान है। यदि वानर उस चंदन को छूते हैं, तो उन्हें इन शक्तिशाली गंधर्वों के क्रोध का सामना करना पड़ेगा, जिससे अनावश्यक युद्ध छिड़ सकता है और मूल उद्देश्य (सीता की खोज) बाधित हो सकता है। सुग्रीव की यह चेतावनी उनकी रणनीतिक दूरदर्शिता को दर्शाती है।
