Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तारायाः पितरम् राजा श्वशुरम् भीम विक्रमम् ।
अब्रवीत् प्रांजलिः वाक्यम् अभिगम्य प्रणम्य च ॥ ॥४-४२-२॥
Tārāyāḥ pitaram rājā śvaśuram bhīma vikramam । Abravīt prāñjaliḥ vākyam abhigamya praṇamya ca ॥ ॥4-42-2॥
Translation
Approaching his father-in-law, the father of Tara, possessing terrible valor, King Sugriva bowed to him and, with folded hands, spoke these words.

तारा के पिता और अपने श्वसुर, भयंकर पराक्रमी सुषेण के पास जाकर, राजा सुग्रीव ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया और हाथ जोड़कर यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse is a striking example of cultural etiquette and hierarchy. Although Sugriva is the Raja (King) and Sushena is his subject/commander, Sushena is also his father-in-law (Tara's father). Therefore, despite his royal authority, Sugriva observes the protocol of family seniority: he approaches Sushena (abhigamya), bows down (praṇamya), and speaks with folded hands (prāñjaliḥ). It illustrates that political power does not override familial respect in this ethos. Valmiki highlights Sugriva’s humility and adherence to dharma here, showing he knows how to balance authority with reverence.

यह श्लोक भारतीय संस्कृति और मर्यादा का अद्भुत उदाहरण है। यद्यपि सुग्रीव 'राजा' हैं और सुषेण उनके 'सेवक' (सेनानी) हैं, तथापि सुषेण रिश्ते में सुग्रीव के श्वसुर (तारा के पिता) हैं। इसलिए, राजा होते हुए भी सुग्रीव 'अभिगम्य' (पास जाकर), 'प्रणम्य' (प्रणाम करके) और 'प्रांजलिः' (हाथ जोड़कर) बात करते हैं। यह दिखाता है कि सत्ता (Power) रिश्तों और बड़ों के सम्मान (Respect) को समाप्त नहीं करती। वाल्मीकि यहाँ सुग्रीव के चरित्र की विनम्रता और संस्कार को उजागर करते हैं।
