Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वसन्ति अग्नि निकाशानाम् घोराणाम् काम रूपिणाम् ।
पावक अर्चिः प्रतीकाशाः समवेताः समन्ततः ॥ ॥४-४२-२१॥
Vasanti agni nikāśānām ghorāṇām kāma rūpiṇām । Pāvaka arciḥ pratīkāśāḥ samavetāḥ samantataḥ ॥ ॥4-42-21॥
Translation
Those Gandharvas resemble fire; they are fierce and capable of changing their form at will. Shining like flames of fire, they dwell there, gathered all around.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे गंधर्व अग्नि के समान तेजस्वी, भयानक और कामरूपी हैं। वे आग की लपटों के समान कांति वाले हैं और वहाँ सब ओर समूहों में रहते हैं।
English Commentary
The Gandharvas here are not depicted as the gentle celestial musicians of common lore, but as ghorāṇām (terrible/fierce) entities. Their description equates them with fire (agni nikāśānām), suggesting both radiance and destructiveness. Like the Vanaras, they are kāma rūpiṇām (shape-shifters). The imagery of them being "gathered all around" warns the search party that they will be outnumbered and surrounded by these flame-like beings upon arrival.

यहाँ गंधर्वों के स्वरूप का भयावह वर्णन है। उन्हें संगीतज्ञ के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि 'घोराणाम्' (भयानक) योद्धाओं के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है। उनकी तुलना 'अग्नि' और 'पावक अर्चिः' (आग की लपटों) से की गई है, जो उनके क्रोध और शक्ति का प्रतीक है। 'कामरूपिणाम्' होने के कारण वे वानरों की तरह ही मायावी युद्ध में निपुण हैं। सुग्रीव यह स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं कि यह शत्रु का इलाका नहीं है, लेकिन यहाँ के निवासी शत्रु से कम खतरनाक भी नहीं हैं।
