Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत्र पंचजनम् हत्वा हयग्रीवम् च दानवम् ।
आजहार ततः चक्रम् शंखम् च पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ ॥४-४२-२८॥
Tatra pañcajanam hatvā hayagrīvam ca dānavam । Ājahāra tataḥ cakram śaṅkham ca puruṣottamaḥ ॥ ॥4-42-28॥
Translation
It was there that the Supreme Person (Vishnu) killed the demons Panchajana and Hayagriva, and took possession of the Chakra (discus) and the Conch (shell).

वहीं पर पुरुषोत्तम (भगवान विष्णु) ने पंचजन और हयग्रीव नामक दानवों को मारकर उनसे चक्र और शंख (पांचजन्य) छीना (प्राप्त किया) था।
English Commentary
This verse details the martial history of Chakravan mountain. Purushottama (Lord Vishnu) defeated two key adversaries here: the demon Panchajana (from whom the conch Panchajanya was obtained) and the demon Hayagriva (distinct from the avatar Hayagriva). By reclaiming the Chakra and Shankha here, this mountain represents a site of cosmic restoration. It implies the region is imbued with the energy of divine victory over evil—a fitting place to search for the demon Ravana.
