श्रोतव्यम् सर्वम् एतस्य भवद्भिः दिष्ट कारिभिः ।
गुरुः एष महाबाहुः श्वशुरो मे महाबलः ॥४-४२-५४॥
śrotavyam sarvam etasya bhavadbhiḥ diṣṭa kāribhiḥ |
guruḥ eṣa mahābāhuḥ śvaśuro me mahābalaḥ ॥4-42-54॥
Translation
All of you, who execute my orders, must listen to everything he says. This mighty-armed one is my Guru and my extremely powerful father-in-law.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरे आदेश का पालन करने वाले आप सभी को इनकी (सुषेण की) हर बात सुननी (माननी) चाहिए। ये महाबाहु मेरे गुरु हैं और मेरे महाबलशाली श्वसुर भी हैं।
English Commentary
In this verse, King Sugriva establishes the chain of command for the search party heading West. By addressing the troops as those who "execute orders," he reminds them of their duty as soldiers. However, the emotional and ethical core of this instruction lies in his description of Sushena. Sugriva refers to Sushena not merely as a commander, but as his "Guru" and "father-in-law" (Sushena is the father of Tara). By highlighting Sushena's strength ("mighty-armed" and "powerful"), Sugriva validates Sushena's capability to lead. This establishes a hierarchy where respect for elders serves as the foundation for military discipline. Sugriva effectively transfers his royal authority to Sushena for the duration of this mission, ensuring that the troops understand that disobeying Sushena would be tantamount to disobeying the King himself. It reflects the Dharmic principle that age and relationship command respect alongside political rank.
