भवंतः च अपि विक्रान्ताः प्रमाणम् सर्वे एव हि ।
प्रमाणम् एनम् संस्थाप्य पश्यध्वम् पश्चिमाम् दिशम् ॥४-४२-५५॥
bhavantaḥ ca api vikrāntāḥ pramāṇam sarve eva hi |
pramāṇam enam saṃsthāpya paśyadhvam paścimām diśam ॥4-42-55॥
Translation
You are indeed all valiant and constitute an authority yourselves. However, establishing him as the authority (leader), search the western direction.

आप सभी भी पराक्रमी हैं और (अपने आप में) प्रमाण (समर्थ/अधिकारी) हैं। फिर भी, इन्हें (सुषेण को) अपना प्रमाण (नेता) बनाकर पश्चिम दिशा में खोज करें।
English Commentary
Sugriva demonstrates profound leadership psychology here. Addressing a troop of powerful, potentially ego-driven warriors, he first validates their prowess, acknowledging that they are "vikranta" (valiant) and stand as authorities in their own right. This stroking of their ego is crucial to maintain morale. However, military operations cannot succeed with multiple independent authorities. Therefore, Sugriva clearly instructs them to establish Sushena as the central "pramana" (authority or standard) for the mission. This directive mitigates potential internal conflicts regarding hierarchy. By framing it this way, Sugriva isn't suppressing their individual greatness but is channeling it through a single focus point—Sushena—to ensure cohesion. It highlights the organizational wisdom that even a team of experts requires a designated leader to navigate the complexities of a mission, specifically the exploration of the West.
