कृतम् हि प्रियम् अस्माकम् राघवेण महात्मना ।
तस्य चेत् प्रतिकारो अस्ति सफलम् जीवितम् भवेत् ॥४-४३-६॥
kṛtam hi priyam asmākam rāghaveṇa mahātmanā |
tasya cet pratikāro asti saphalam jīvitam bhavet ॥4-43-6॥
Translation
Indeed, a great favor was done for us by the high-souled Raghava. If there is a requital for that, then our life would become fruitful.

महात्मा राघव (राम) ने हमारा (बड़ा) प्रिय किया है। यदि उस उपकार का बदला चुका दिया जाए, तो ही हमारा जीवन सफल होगा।
English Commentary
Sugriva continues to elaborate on the theme of gratitude. He explicitly recalls the favor ('priyam') done by the 'high-souled' (Mahatmana) Rama. The use of 'Mahatmana' acknowledges Rama's nobility in helping Sugriva when he was destitute. Sugriva posits that the very validity of their existence ('jivitam') depends on the ability to offer a counter-favor ('pratikara'). This reflects a warrior code where receiving help without returning it brings shame. By framing the search for Sita as the only way to validate their lives, Sugriva instills a deep sense of personal responsibility and existential purpose in Shatabali and his troops.

सुग्रीव यहाँ कृतघ्नता (ungratefulness) को सबसे बड़ा पाप और कृतज्ञता को जीवन की सार्थकता मान रहे हैं। 'महात्मना' शब्द राम की उदारता को दर्शाता है—राम ने बिना किसी पूर्व शर्त के सुग्रीव की सहायता की थी। 'प्रतिकार' (प्रत्युपकार) की भावना यहाँ केंद्रीय है। सुग्रीव का मानना है कि यदि वे राम के काम न आ सके, तो उनका यह जीवन, राजसी सुख और शक्ति सब व्यर्थ है। यह श्लोक वानरों के भीतर भावनात्मक समर्पण जगाने के लिए है, ताकि वे इस कार्य को अपना निजी कार्य मानकर करें, न कि केवल राजा की आज्ञा मानकर।
