ददौ तस्य ततः प्रीतः स्व नामांक उपशोभितम् ।
अंगुलीयम् अभिज्ञानम् राजपुत्र्याः परंतपः ॥ ॥४-४४-१२॥
dadau tasya tataḥ prītaḥ sva nāmāṃka upaśobhitam |
aṅgulīyam abhijñānam rājaputryāḥ paraṃtapaḥ ॥4-44-12॥
Translation
Then, the scorcher of enemies (Rama), being pleased, gave his ring adorned with his own name engraved upon it to Hanuman as a token of recognition for the Princess (Sita).

तदनन्तर, शत्रुओं का संताप करने वाले श्री राम ने प्रसन्न होकर अपने नाम के अक्षरों से सुशोभित वह अंगूठी, राजकुमारी (सीता) के लिए पहचान-चिह्न (अभिज्ञान) के रूप में, हनुमान को दी।
English Commentary
This verse introduces the Abhijnana (token of recognition)—the famous ring of Rama. This object serves as the narrative key that will later unlock Sita's trust in the Ashoka Vatika. The epithet Parantapa (scorcher of foes) contrasts with the gentle act of giving the ring, showing the duality of Rama as a fierce warrior and a loving husband. The ring is described as Sva-nama-anka (marked with his own name), establishing its authenticity. In the context of espionage and diplomacy, such a token is crucial to prove that the messenger is genuine and not a deceptive trap set by the enemy. This moment formally designates Hanuman as the personal representative of Rama, distinct from his role as Sugriva's minister.

यह रामायण के सबसे मार्मिक और महत्वपूर्ण प्रसंगों में से एक है। वह अंगूठी (अंगुलीयम्) केवल एक आभूषण नहीं, बल्कि राम और सीता के वियोग को पाटने वाला सेतु है। 'स्वनामांकोपशोभितम्' (अपने नाम से अंकित) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यह प्रामाणिकता का प्रमाण है। राम 'परंतप' (शत्रु-तापन) हैं, किन्तु यहाँ वे 'प्रीत' (प्रसन्न) होकर प्रेम का प्रतीक सौंप रहे हैं। सीता जी, जो लंका में बंदी हैं, किसी भी वानर पर सहज विश्वास नहीं कर सकती थीं, क्योंकि राक्षस मायावी होते हैं। इसलिए 'अभिज्ञान' (पहचान) की आवश्यकता थी। यह अंगूठी राम का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है; यह हनुमान जी को केवल एक दूत से 'रामदूत' में पदोन्नत करती है। यह दृश्य राम की व्याकुलता और आशा की किरण का संगम है।
