आदर्श तल संकाशा ततो वै पृथिवी मया ।
अलात चक्र प्रतिमा दृष्टा गोष्पदवत् तदा - कृता ॥४-४६-१३॥
ādaraśa tala saṃkāśā tato vai pṛthivī mayā । alāta cakra pratimā dṛṣṭā goṣpadavat tadā - kṛtā ॥4-46-13॥
Translation
Then, while fleeing, the earth appeared to me as clear as the surface of a mirror. Due to my speed, it sometimes resembled a circling firebrand (Alata-chakra) and at other times seemed as small as a cow's hoofprint.

तब आकाश में उड़ते हुए मुझे यह पृथ्वी दर्पण के तल के समान निर्मल दिखाई दी। कभी यह (मेरे वेग के कारण) अलात-चक्र (घूमते हुए जलते अंगारे के चक्र) जैसी और कभी गाय के खुर (गोखुर) के समान छोटी प्रतीत हुई।
English Commentary
In this verse, Sugriva describes the optical illusions experienced during his high-speed flight from Vali. The imagery used is vivid and captures the physics of rapid motion and high altitude. Describing the earth as a "mirror surface" (Adarsha tala) suggests the blurring of topographical features into a smooth expanse or the reflection of water bodies from a height. The metaphor of the Alata-chakra (a circling firebrand) is significant; in Indian philosophy and poetics, this is often used to describe illusions created by movement. Here, it implies that Sugriva was spinning or changing directions so fast that the landscape below seemed to swirl like a wheel of fire. Finally, comparing the earth to a "cow's hoofprint" emphasizes the immense altitude he reached, reducing the vast world to an insignificant speck, highlighting both his supernatural abilities and his desperation.

सुग्रीव यहाँ अपने पलायन की तीव्र गति और उससे उत्पन्न दृष्टि-भ्रम का अत्यंत काव्यात्मक वर्णन कर रहे हैं। जब कोई अत्यधिक ऊँचाई और वेग से यात्रा करता है, तो नीचे के दृश्य बदल जाते हैं। सुग्रीव कहते हैं कि पृथ्वी उन्हें 'आदर्श तल' (दर्पण) जैसी लगी, जिसका अर्थ है कि नदियाँ और जलाशय चमक रहे थे या ऊँचाई से पृथ्वी समतल दिख रही थी। 'अलात चक्र' एक विशिष्ट उपमा है; जब एक जलती हुई लकड़ी को तेजी से घुमाया जाता है, तो वह आग के एक पहिये जैसा दिखता है। सुग्रीव अपनी तीव्र दिशा परिवर्तन और वेग के कारण पृथ्वी को घूमते हुए महसूस कर रहे थे। अंत में 'गोष्पदवत्' (गाय के खुर के निशान जितना छोटा) कहना यह दर्शाता है कि वे इतनी ऊँचाई पर थे कि विशाल पृथ्वी भी उन्हें अत्यंत सूक्ष्म लग रही थी। यह श्लोक सुग्रीव के भय और वानर-सुलभ चपलता का अद्भुत मिश्रण प्रस्तुत करता है।
