स पश्यन् विविधान् देशान् अस्तम् च गिरि सत्तमम् ।
प्राप्य च अस्तम् गिरि श्रेष्ठम् उत्तरम् संप्रधावितः ॥४-४६-१९॥
sa paśyan vividhān deśān astam ca giri sattamam । prāpya ca astam giri śreṣṭham uttaram saṃpradhāvitaḥ ॥4-46-19॥
Translation
Seeing various countries and the excellent Asta Mountain (Sunset Mountain), and having reached that best of mountains, Asta, I ran speedliy towards the north.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैंने अनेक देशों और पर्वतों में श्रेष्ठ अस्ताचल को देखा। उस श्रेष्ठ अस्ताचल पर्वत पर पहुँचकर, मैं (वहाँ से) उत्तर दिशा की ओर तेजी से भागा।
English Commentary
Sugriva arrives at the western limit of the world, marked by the Asta Giri (Sunset Mountain), the counterpart to the Sunrise Mountain he saw in the East. He mentions passing over "various countries," implying a flight path that crossed different civilizations and kingdoms, not just wilderness. Reaching the Sunset Mountain symbolizes the end of the day or the end of hope, yet Sugriva could not stop. The transition to the North is immediate and frantic (sampradhavitah - ran specifically/speedily). This completes three-quarters of a chaotic circumambulation of the earth. The mention of specific "best of mountains" (Giri sattamam) highlights that he was seeking high ground or divine geography for sanctuary, but even the mythological Asta mountain offered no asylum from his brother's wrath.

पश्चिम दिशा में पहुँचकर सुग्रीव ने 'अस्ताचल' (अस्त होने का पर्वत) देखा। भारतीय साहित्य में पूर्व में उदयाचल और पश्चिम में अस्ताचल की कल्पना की गई है। सुग्रीव ने रस्ते में 'विविधान् देशान्' (विभिन्न देशों) को देखा, जो इस बात का प्रमाण है कि उनकी यात्रा निर्जन वनों तक सीमित नहीं थी, बल्कि वे जनपदों के ऊपर से भी गुजरे। अस्ताचल पर पहुँचकर भी उन्हें सुरक्षा नहीं मिली, इसलिए वे उत्तर दिशा की ओर 'संप्रधावितः' (तेजी से दौड़े/भागे)। यहाँ 'संप्रधावितः' शब्द में जो वेग है, वह बताता है कि सुग्रीव की थकान के बावजूद उनके प्राण बचाने की जिजीविषा (जीने की इच्छा) प्रबल थी। उन्होंने एक पूर्ण चक्र लगभग पूरा कर लिया था (पूर्व -> दक्षिण -> पश्चिम -> उत्तर)।
