यदा तु दुंदुभिम् नाम दानवम् महिष आकृतिम् ।
परिकालयते वाली मलयम् प्रति पर्वतम् ॥ ॥४-४६-३॥

Translation
(Sugriva began): "When Vali chased the demon named Dundubhi, who had assumed the form of a buffalo, towards the Malaya mountain..."

(सुग्रीव ने कथा आरंभ की) "जब वाली ने 'दुंदुभि' नामक महिष (भैंसे) का रूप धारण करने वाले दानव को मलय पर्वत की ओर खदेड़ा..."
English Commentary
Sugriva initiates the flashback. He introduces the antagonist of this subplot: Dundubhi, a Danava (demon) in the shape of a buffalo (Mahisha akritim). This incident explains why Sugriva was left in charge and how the throne briefly came into his possession. The use of the verb Parikalayate (driving away/chasing) illustrates Vali's dominance; he didn't just fight the demon but drove him out of the territory towards the Malaya mountain.

सुग्रीव यहाँ से अपने और वाली के बीच हुए विवाद की जड़ का वर्णन करते हैं। दुंदुभि एक मायावी असुर था जो भैंसे का रूप धरकर आया था। 'परिकालयते' का अर्थ है खदेड़ना या पीछा करना। यह घटना किष्किन्धा के इतिहास में महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि इसी घटना के कारण भाइयों के बीच गलतफहमी पैदा हुई। मलय पर्वत का उल्लेख भौगोलिक संदर्भ देता है। यह दिखाता है कि वाली अपने राज्य की रक्षा के लिए कितना तत्पर और शक्तिशाली था कि उसने अकेले ही एक विशाल दानव को खदेड़ दिया था।
