तत् अहः प्रथमम् कृत्वा मासे प्रस्रवणम् गताः ।
कपि राजेन संगम्य निराशाः कपि कुंजराः ॥४-४७-६॥
tat ahaḥ prathamam kṛtvā māse prasravaṇam gatāḥ । kapi rājena saṃgamya nirāśāḥ kapi kuṃjarāḥ ॥4-47-6॥
Translation
Counting that (day of departure) as the first, the best among monkeys returned to Mount Prasravana after a month, disappointed, and met with the King of Monkeys.

उस (आदेश के) दिन को पहला दिन मानकर, एक मास पूरा होने पर वे श्रेष्ठ वानर निराश होकर प्रस्रवण पर्वत पर लौट आए और वानरराज (सुग्रीव) से मिले।
English Commentary
The deadline imposed by Sugriva was strict. Counting day one from their departure, the monkeys returned exactly as the month concluded (mase). This verse highlights their punctuality and fear of Sugriva's punishment for tardiness, even though they failed in their primary objective. The word Nirashah (disappointed/without hope) sets a somber tone. The elite search parties returned to base camp at Mount Prasravana empty-handed. This moment serves as a narrative pivot, clearing the stage of the "failed" expeditions to focus the spotlight on the southern search party, which is yet to return.

यहाँ समय सीमा (Deadline) की समाप्ति का वर्णन है। सुग्रीव ने कठोर चेतावनी दी थी कि एक महीने के भीतर लौटना है। 'मासे' (महीना पूरा होने पर) वानर वापस आ गए। उनके अनुशासन का प्रमाण यह है कि वे खाली हाथ होने के बावजूद डर और कर्तव्य के कारण लौटे। 'निराशाः' (निराश होकर) शब्द बहुत भारी है—इतने श्रम और व्यापक खोज के बाद भी परिणाम शून्य था। वे प्रस्रवण पर्वत पर लौटे जहाँ राम और सुग्रीव प्रतीक्षा कर रहे थे। यह श्लोक तनाव (tension) को बढ़ाता है क्योंकि पाठक जानता है कि दक्षिण दिशा (हनुमान का दल) के अलावा बाकी सभी दल असफल रहे हैं।
