विचित्य तु दिशम् पूर्वाम् यथा उक्ताम् सचिवैः सह ।
अदृष्ट्वा विनतः सीताम् आजगाम महाबलः ॥४-४७-७॥
vicitya tu diśam pūrvām yathā uktām sacivaiḥ saha । adṛṣṭvā vinataḥ sītām ājagāma mahābalaḥ ॥4-47-7॥
Translation
Having searched the eastern direction as instructed, along with his ministers, the mighty Vinata returned without having seen Sita.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मंत्रियों के साथ पूर्व दिशा की (सुग्रीव के) कथनानुसार खोज करके, सीता को न पाकर महाबली विनत वापस आ गए।
English Commentary
The reporting begins with the East. Vinata, the commander of the eastern expedition, returns. Despite being Mahabalah (mighty) and having his ministers (sacivaih) with him, his mission was unsuccessful. The text reiterates yatha uktam (as instructed), absolving Vinata of incompetence; he followed the plan, but Sita simply wasn't there. This process of elimination begins to narrow down the possibilities for Rama and Sugriva, although initially, it just brings news of failure.

अब व्यक्तिगत रूप से सेनापतियों की वापसी का विवरण दिया जा रहा है। सबसे पहले पूर्व दिशा का नेतृत्व करने वाले 'विनत' का उल्लेख है। विनत एक महाबली वानर थे, फिर भी वे असफल रहे। 'यथा उक्ताम्' (जैसा कहा गया था) वाक्यांश पुनः पुष्टि करता है कि उन्होंने निर्देशों का पालन किया था, उनकी असफलता लापरवाही के कारण नहीं थी। 'अदृष्ट्वा' (न देखकर) सीता को, वे वापस आए। यह राम के लिए पहला झटका था कि पूर्व दिशा में सीता नहीं हैं।
