Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रणष्टो जीवित अन्ताय क्रुद्धः तेन महामुनिः ।
तेन धर्माअत्मना शप्तम् कृत्स्नम् तत्र महद् वनम् ॥ ॥४-४८-१४॥
praṇaṣṭo jīvita antāya kruddhaḥ tena mahāmuniḥ |
tena dharmātmanā śaptam kṛtsnam tatra mahad vanam ॥4-48-14॥
Translation
(The boy) lost his life and perished. Enraged by this, that high-souled great sage cursed the entire vast forest there.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वह बालक) जीवन का अंत होने पर नष्ट (मृत) हो गया। इससे क्रुद्ध होकर उन महात्मा महामुनि ने वहां के उस संपूर्ण विशाल वन को शाप दे दिया।
English Commentary
The tragic climax of the backstory occurs here: the boy dies. The sage's grief instantly transforms into rage ('Kruddhah'). Consequently, he curses the entire forest. The use of 'Dharmatmana' (righteous soul) for the sage implies that his power to curse comes from his accumulated merit, even if the act itself stems from grief. This explains why the forest is now a barren wasteland—it is suffering under the potency of a grieving father's word.

यहाँ त्रासदी घटित होती है। बालक की मृत्यु का स्पष्ट कारण यहाँ नहीं दिया गया है (संभवतः वन की कठिनाइयों या किसी दुर्घटना से), लेकिन परिणाम स्पष्ट है—पुत्र की मृत्यु। पुत्र शोक से उत्पन्न क्रोध में ऋषि ने पूरे वन को ही शाप दे दिया। 'धर्मात्मा' शब्द का प्रयोग विरोधाभासी लग सकता है, लेकिन यह दर्शाता है कि ऋषि मूलतः धर्मपरायण थे, किन्तु पुत्र-मोह और शोक ने उन्हें इतना विचलित कर दिया कि उन्होंने जड़ प्रकृति (वन) को भी नहीं बख्शा।
