अन्वेषमाणाः ते सर्वे वानराः सर्वतो दिशम् ।
न सीताम् ददृशुर् वीरा मैथिलीम् जनक आत्मजाम् ॥ ॥४-४८-४॥
anveṣamāṇāḥ te sarve vānarāḥ sarvato diśam । na sītām dadṛśur vīrā maithilīm janaka ātmajām ॥ ॥4-48-4॥
Translation
Searching in every direction, those heroic Vanaras did not see Sita, the daughter of Janaka (Maithili).

सभी दिशाओं में ढूँढते हुए उन सभी वीर वानरों ने जनकनन्दिनी मैथिली सीता को नहीं देखा।
English Commentary
This verse underscores the initial failure of the mission despite the heroic efforts involved. The juxtaposition of "sarvato diśam" (every direction) with "na dadṛśuḥ" (did not see) highlights the futility they are currently experiencing. The use of the patronymic "Janaka ātmajām" (daughter of Janaka) evokes the nobility of the person lost, adding emotional weight to their failure. It implies that a princess of such high stature is lost in the wild, increasing the urgency. The verse builds narrative tension by contrasting the Vanaras' valor ("vīrā") with their inability to achieve the goal.

यह श्लोक हताशा की पहली लहर का परिचय देता है। "सर्वतो दिशम्" (सभी दिशाओं में) प्रयास करने के बाद भी परिणाम नकारात्मक रहा। यहाँ सीता के लिए "जनक आत्मजाम्" (जनक की पुत्री) विशेषण का प्रयोग कर कवि उनकी उच्च कुलीनता और पवित्रता की याद दिलाते हैं, जो वानरों के लिए इस असफलता को और अधिक कष्टदायी बनाता है। "वीरा" (वीर) शब्द का प्रयोग विडंबनापूर्ण है—वे वीर हैं, शक्तिशाली हैं, फिर भी अभी तक असफल हैं। यह स्थिति उनके धैर्य की परीक्षा है और कथा में तनाव (tension) को बढ़ाती है।
