अन्योन्यम् अभिवीक्षन्तौ न तृप्तिम् अभिजग्मतुः ।
त्वम् वयस्योऽसि हृद्यः मे हि एकम् दुःखम् सुखम् च नौ ॥ ॥४-५-१७॥
Anyonyam abhivīkṣantau na tṛptim abhijagmatuḥ । Tvam vayasyo'si hṛdyaḥ me hi ekam duḥkham sukham ca nau ॥ ॥4-5-17॥
Translation
Gazing at each other, they could not be satiated. [Sugriva said] "You are the friend of my heart. Indeed, from now on, our happiness and sorrow are one."

वे एक-दूसरे को निहारते हुए तृप्त नहीं हो रहे थे। [सुग्रीव ने कहा] "आप मेरे हृदयप्रिय मित्र हैं। अब से हम दोनों का सुख और दुःख एक ही है।"
English Commentary
This verse provides the quintessential definition of friendship in the Ramayana: shared destiny. Ekam duhkham sukham ca nau—"Our sorrows and joys are one." It moves beyond a military pact to an emotional union. The text mentions they were not satiated by looking at each other, indicating a profound spiritual resonance (resonance of souls). Both are exiled kings, both have lost their wives, and both have been wronged. Their shared trauma creates an instant, deep empathy that forms the bedrock of their alliance.

यह मित्रता की सर्वोच्च परिभाषा है: "एकम् दुःखम् सुखम् च नौ" (हमारा सुख और दुःख एक है)। सच्चा मित्र वही है जो मित्र के दुःख में दुखी और सुख में सुखी हो। वे एक-दूसरे को अपलक देख रहे थे, मानो जन्मों के बिछड़े हुए साथी मिले हों। राम और सुग्रीव दोनों ही अपनी पत्नियों के वियोग और राज्य से निष्कासन का दर्द झेल रहे थे, इसलिए उनकी यह सहानुभूति केवल शब्दों तक सीमित नहीं थी, बल्कि वास्तविक अनुभव पर आधारित थी। यह श्लोक भावनात्मक एकता का शिखर है।
