Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रति अभाषत काकुत्स्थः सुग्रीवम् प्रहसन् इव ।
उपकार फलम् मित्रम् विदितम् मे महाकपे ॥ ॥४-५-२५॥
Prati abhāṣata Kākutsthaḥ Sugrīvam prahasan iva । Upakāra phalam mitram viditam me mahākape ॥ ॥4-5-25॥
Translation
Kakutstha (Rama) replied to Sugriva, smiling as it were: "O Great Monkey, I know that the fruit of friendship is mutual assistance."
हिंदी अनुवाद
काकुत्स्थ (राम) ने हँसते हुए से सुग्रीव को उत्तर दिया—"हे महाकपि! मैं जानता हूँ कि मित्रता का फल उपकार (एक-दूसरे की सहायता करना) ही होता है।"
English Commentary
Rama responds with a smile (Prahasan iva), which conveys confidence and ease, instantly calming Sugriva's anxiety. Rama cites a maxim of relationships: Upakara phalam mitram—the true fruit/purpose of friendship is active help. By stating this, Rama validates the alliance. He is telling Sugriva, "You don't need to beg; helping you is now my duty as a friend." It turns the plea into a partnership.

राम की प्रतिक्रिया में 'प्रहसन् इव' (मानो हँसते हुए) बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। यह सुग्रीव को आश्वस्त करता है कि उनका कार्य राम के लिए कठिन नहीं है। राम एक सार्वभौमिक सत्य (सुभाषित) कहते हैं: 'उपकार फलम् मित्रम्'—मित्रता शब्द मात्र नहीं है, इसका प्रमाण संकट में सहायता करना है। 'महाकपे' सम्बोधन सुग्रीव के खोए हुए आत्मसम्मान को लौटाने का प्रयास है। राम उन्हें बता रहे हैं कि वे अकेले नहीं हैं।
