तस्य अस्य वसतो अरण्ये नियतस्य महात्मनः ।
रावणेन हृता भार्या स त्वाम् शरणम् आगतः ॥ ॥४-५-६॥
Tasya asya vasato araṇye niyatasyā mahātmanaḥ |
Rāvaṇena hṛtā bhāryā sa tvām śaraṇam āgataḥ ॥4-5-6॥
Translation
While this high-souled one was living in the forest with self-control, his wife was abducted by Ravana. He has now come to seek your refuge.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वन में संयमपूर्वक निवास करते हुए इन महात्मा की पत्नी को रावण ने हर लिया है। वे ही राम अब आपकी शरण में आए हैं।
English Commentary
This is a diplomatic masterstroke by Hanuman. By saying Sa tvam sharanam agatah (He has come to your refuge), Hanuman flips the power dynamic. Usually, beings seek Rama's refuge. Here, Hanuman humbles Rama to empower Sugriva. Sugriva is currently feeling weak and hunted; hearing that a great warrior seeks his help boosts his confidence and dignity. Furthermore, mentioning the abduction of the wife creates immediate empathy, as Sugriva shares the exact same sorrow (his wife Ruma was taken by Bali). This shared trauma becomes the basis of their alliance.

यह श्लोक कूटनीति का मास्टरस्ट्रोक है। हनुमान जी कहते हैं 'स त्वाम् शरणम् आगतः' (वे आपकी शरण में आए हैं)। भगवान राम, जो त्रिभुवन के स्वामी हैं, उन्हें सुग्रीव का शरणार्थी बताना—यह सुग्रीव के अहम् को तुष्ट करने और उसके भय को मिटाने के लिए है। सुग्रीव को लगता है कि वह कमजोर है, लेकिन जब उसे पता चलता है कि इतना महान वीर उसकी मदद माँग रहा है, तो उसे अपनी महत्ता का अनुभव होता है। साथ ही, रावण द्वारा पत्नी हरण की बात बताकर वे दोनों की पीड़ा में समानता (सुग्रीव की पत्नी भी छीनी गयी है) स्थापित करते हैं।
