अन्योन्यम् संपरिष्वज्य जग्मुर् योजनम् अंतरम् ।
ते नष्ट संज्ञाः तृषिताः संभ्रांताः सलिल अर्थिनः ॥ ॥४-५०-२२॥
anyonyaṃ saṃpariṣvajya jagmur yojanam antaram । te naṣṭa saṃjñāḥ tṛṣitāḥ saṃbhrāntāḥ salila arthinaḥ ॥ ॥4-50-22॥
Translation
(While traversing the dark tunnel), clutching/hugging one another, they traveled a distance of one Yojana (approx. 8 miles). They had lost their senses, were thirsty, confused, and seeking water.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उस प्रकाश तक पहुँचने से पूर्व या उस यात्रा के दौरान) वे एक दूसरे को पकड़ कर (गले लगाकर) एक योजन की दूरी तक चले। वे प्यास से व्याकुल (तृषिताः), भटके हुए (संभ्रांताः) और सुध-बुध खोए हुए (नष्ट संज्ञाः) थे, और केवल जल चाहते थे।
English Commentary
This verse details the grueling physical trek through the tunnel before fully realizing the relief mentioned in verse 21 (or clarifying the journey to it). The act of saṃpariṣvajya (hugging/clutching each other) highlights the utter darkness and the need for tactile contact to stay together. Traveling a yojanam (approx. 8-9 miles) in such conditions explains why they were naṣṭa saṃjñāḥ (disoriented/near-fainting). The combination of tṛṣitāḥ (thirsty) and saṃbhrāntāḥ (confused) paints a picture of a desperate march where survival instincts barely kept them moving toward the hope of water.
