यः कृतः समयो अस्माकम् सुग्रीवेण महात्मना ।
स तु कालो व्यतिक्रान्तो बिले च परिवर्तताम् ॥ ॥४-५२-२२॥
yaḥ kṛtaḥ samayo asmākam sugrīveṇa mahātmanā । sa tu kālo vyatikrānto bile ca parivartatām ॥ ॥4-52-22॥
Translation
"The time limit that was set for us by the high-souled Sugriva, that time has passed while we were wandering in this hole."

"महात्मा सुग्रीव ने हमारे लिए जो समय (अवधि) निर्धारित किया था, वह काल तो इस बिल में घूमते हुए ही व्यतीत हो गया है।"
English Commentary
Hanuman clearly articulates the crisis. The samaya (contract/deadline) set by Sugriva has been breached. The phrase bile ca parivartatām (revolving/wandering in the hole) conveys the disorientation and loss of temporal awareness they suffered underground. By referring to Sugriva as mahātmanā (great-souled), Hanuman underscores the king's authority and the severity of disobeying him. The crux of the problem is not just being lost, but the vyatikrānta (transgression/passing) of the deadline, which in the strict military code of the Vanaras, equates to death.

हनुमान अब अपनी चिंता का मूल कारण बताते हैं। 'समयः' का अर्थ यहाँ 'शर्त' या 'समय सीमा' (deadline) है। सुग्रीव ने एक मास की अवधि दी थी। हनुमान स्वीकार करते हैं कि गुफा (बिल) के मोहपाश और अन्धकार में भटकते हुए ('परिवर्तताम्') वह अमूल्य समय हाथ से निकल गया है। 'महात्मना' विशेषण सुग्रीव के लिए प्रयोग करके वे यह भी जता रहे हैं कि सुग्रीव एक महान राजा हैं और उनकी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन अक्षम्य अपराध है। यह वानरों के भय का कारण स्पष्ट करता है—वे बाहरी शत्रुओं से नहीं, अपने राजा के वचन भंग से डरते हैं।
