Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सहसा पिदधुः दृष्टिम् हृष्टा गमन कान्क्षिणः ।
वानराः तु महात्मानो हस्त रुद्ध मुखाः तदा ॥ ॥४-५२-२९॥
sahasā pidadhuḥ dṛṣṭim hṛṣṭā gamana kānkṣiṇaḥ । vānarāḥ tu mahātmāno hasta ruddha mukhāḥ tadā ॥ ॥4-52-29॥
Translation
Desiring to leave and delighted, the high-souled monkeys suddenly covered their vision; at that time, their faces were obstructed by their hands.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जाने की इच्छा रखने वाले उन महात्मा वानरों ने प्रसन्न होकर सहसा अपनी दृष्टि ढक ली और उस समय अपने हाथों से अपने मुखों को भी बंद कर लिया।
English Commentary
The mood shifts to relief and anticipation. The monkeys are hṛṣṭā (delighted) solely by the prospect of departure (gamana kānkṣiṇaḥ). Their action is swift (sahasā), indicating no hesitation or suspicion regarding the ascetic's command. The phrase hasta ruddha mukhāḥ (faces blocked by hands) paints a vivid picture of the group standing in total darkness of their own making, physically sealing themselves off from the cave's environment to facilitate their spiritual ejection from it.

वानरों की मानसिक स्थिति का वर्णन यहाँ 'हृष्टा' (प्रसन्न) शब्द से किया गया है। अंधकारमय गुफा से मुक्ति की आशा ने उन्हें उत्साहित कर दिया है। 'गमन कान्क्षिणः' (जाने की इच्छा रखने वाले) होने के कारण उन्होंने तनिक भी विलंब नहीं किया। 'सहसा' (अचानक/तुरंत) आँखों को ढकना उनकी तत्परता को दिखाता है। श्लोक का चित्र अत्यंत सजीव है—विशालकाय वानर बच्चों की भांति अपने हाथों से मुँह और आँखें छिपाकर खड़े हैं, जो उनकी सरलता और स्थिति की विचित्रता दोनों को दर्शाता है।
