Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रावणम् सहिताः सर्वे राक्षसम् काम रूपिणम् ।
सीतया सह वैदेह्या मार्गध्वम् इति चोदिताः ॥ ॥४-५२-८॥
rāvaṇam sahitāḥ sarve rākṣasam kāma rūpiṇam । sītayā saha vaidehyā mārgadhvam iti coditāḥ ॥ ॥4-52-8॥
Translation
"We have been ordered (by Sugriva) thus: 'Search all of you together for the demon Ravana, who can change his form at will, and for Vaidehi (Sita).'"

"हमें (सुग्रीव द्वारा) यह आदेश दिया गया है कि—'तुम सब मिलकर उस कामरूपी राक्षस रावण और वैदेही सीता को खोजो'।"
English Commentary
The mandate is clear: "Search" (margadhvam). The mission targets both the perpetrator, Ravana, and the victim, Sita. Describing Ravana as 'kama rupinam' (shape-shifter) highlights the difficulty of their intelligence gathering—they are hunting a master of disguise. This context helps the ascetic understand why the Vanaras might have mistaken her cave for a hiding spot or why they are so desperate in their search.

हनुमान जी अपने मिशन का मुख्य उद्देश्य बताते हैं: 'मार्गध्वम्' (खोजो/ढूँढो)। लक्ष्य दो हैं—अपहर्ता (रावण) और अपहृता (सीता)। रावण को 'काम रूपिणम्' (इच्छानुसार रूप बदलने वाला) कहा गया है, जो यह बताता है कि यह कार्य कितना कठिन है। शत्रु मायावी है और छिपने में माहिर है। 'चोदिताः' (प्रेरित/आदेशित) शब्द दर्शाता है कि वे एक सख्त समय सीमा और कर्तव्य के बंधन में बंधे हैं।
