ततः ते ददृशुः घोरम् सागरम् वरुण आलयम् ।
अपारम् अभिगर्जन्तम् घोरैः ऊर्मिभिः आकुलम् ॥ ॥४-५३-१॥
tataḥ te dadṛśuḥ ghoram sāgaram varuṇa ālayam । apāram abhigarjantam ghoraiḥ ūrmibhiḥ ākulam ॥ ॥4-53-1॥
Translation
Then they saw the terrible ocean, the abode of Varuna, boundlessly vast, roaring, and agitated with terrible waves.

तदनन्तर उन्होंने वरुण के निवास स्थान, उस घोर (भयानक) सागर को देखा, जो अपार था, गर्जना कर रहा था और भयानक लहरों से व्याप्त था।
English Commentary
The scene shifts dramatically from the static darkness of the cave to the dynamic violence of the ocean. The descriptors—ghoram (terrible), abhigarjantam (roaring towards them), and ākulam (agitated)—create an atmosphere of intimidation. Identifying it as varuṇa ālayam (abode of Varuna) elevates the ocean to a divine, insurmountable entity. The vastness (apāram) of the ocean mirrors the magnitude of their seemingly impossible mission, setting a foreboding tone for the dilemma that follows.

यहाँ से सर्ग 53 का और एक नए वातावरण का आरम्भ होता है। गुफा की शांति के बाद अब दृश्य में 'घोरम् सागरम्' (भयानक समुद्र) है। 'वरुण आलयम्' (वरुण देव का घर) कहकर इसकी विशालता और दिव्यता का संकेत दिया गया है। 'अभिगर्जन्तम्' (गर्जना करता हुआ) और 'घोरैः ऊर्मिभिः' (भयंकर लहरें) वानरों के मन में भय और विस्मय उत्पन्न करते हैं। यह सागर अब उनके मार्ग में अगली और सबसे बड़ी बाधा है। यह दृश्य प्रकृति की रौद्र रूप का चित्रण है जो वानरों की परीक्षा लेगा।
