Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मयस्य माया विहितम् गिरि दुर्गम् विचिन्वताम् ।
तेषाम् मासो व्यतिक्रान्तो यो राज्ञा समयः कृतः ॥ ॥४-५३-२॥
mayasya māyā vihitam giri durgam vicinvatām । teṣām māso vyatikrānto yo rājñā samayaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥ ॥4-53-2॥
Translation
While they were searching the difficult mountain fortress created by the magic of Maya, the month that was set as the time limit by the King had passed.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मय दानव की माया से निर्मित उस दुर्गम पर्वत-गुफा को ढूंढते हुए (उसमें समय बिताते हुए), राजा (सुग्रीव) द्वारा निर्धारित 'एक मास' का समय बीत गया।
English Commentary
The reality of their temporal transgression hits them. The verse explicitly connects their entrapment in mayasya māyā (Maya's illusion) with the loss of time. The crucial phrase is māso vyatikrānto (the month has passed). This realization transforms their rescue from the cave into a new nightmare. They have survived the cave only to find they have failed their primary directive—the samayaḥ (covenant/deadline) set by King Sugriva. The illusion of the cave had suspended their anxiety; reality now restores it with full force.

सागर को देखते ही वानरों को वास्तविकता का बोध होता है। गुफा में वे काल-बोध खो बैठे थे। यहाँ कवि स्पष्ट करते हैं कि 'मयस्य माया' (मय की माया) के कारण वे भ्रमित रहे और 'मासो व्यतिक्रान्तो' (महीना बीत गया)। सुग्रीव ने जो 'समयः' (समय सीमा/शर्त) निर्धारित की थी, वह अब समाप्त हो चुकी है। यह श्लोक कथा में एक प्रमुख संकट (climax/crisis) बिंदु है। अब उनके सामने दोहरी मुसीबत है—सामने अथाह सागर और पीछे क्रुद्ध राजा का मृत्युदंड।
