Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तीक्ष्णः प्रकृत्या सुग्रीवः स्वामि भावे व्यवस्थितः ।
न क्षमिष्यति नः सर्वान् अपराध कृतो गतान् ॥४-५३-१४॥
tīkṣṇaḥ prakṛtyā sugrīvaḥ svāmi bhāve vyavasthitaḥ |
na kṣamiṣyati naḥ sarvān aparādha kṛto gatān ॥4-53-14॥
Translation
"Sugriva is harsh by nature and is established in the position of a Master. He will not forgive any of us who return as offenders."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"सुग्रीव स्वभाव से ही तीक्ष्ण (कठोर) हैं और इस समय वे स्वामी (राजा) के पद पर आसीन हैं। हम अपराधी बनकर जब वहाँ जाएँगे, तो वे हम में से किसी को भी क्षमा नहीं करेंगे।"
English Commentary
Angada provides a candid character assessment of the King. He describes Sugriva as tīkṣṇaḥ (sharp, harsh, or severe) by nature. This is not just a critique but a factual observation of Sugriva’s disciplinary style. Furthermore, the phrase svāmi bhāve vyavasthitaḥ indicates that Sugriva is entrenched in the mindset of an absolute monarch; he will prioritize the law over kinship or past service. Angada dismisses any hope of nepotism saving him or past merits saving the others. He is convinced that as aparādha kṛtaḥ (perpetrators of an offense/crime), they will face the full force of the law without mercy.

यह श्लोक सुग्रीव के चरित्र और राजनीति का अंगद के दृष्टिकोण से विश्लेषण है। 'तीक्ष्णः प्रकृत्या' (स्वभाव से कठोर) सुग्रीव का एक महत्वपूर्ण विशेषण है। बालि के भय में लम्बे समय तक रहने और अब राज्य प्राप्त करने के बाद, सुग्रीव अनुशासन के प्रति अत्यंत सख्त हैं। 'स्वामि भावे व्यवस्थितः' का अर्थ है कि वे अब मित्र या चाचा नहीं, बल्कि पूर्णतः 'राजा' की भूमिका में हैं, जहाँ व्यक्तिगत संबंधों (जैसे अंगद के साथ चाचा-भतीजे का संबंध) का कोई मूल्य नहीं है। अंगद को विश्वास है कि 'अपराध कृतो' (अपराध करने वाले) के रूप में लौटने पर क्षमा की कोई गुंजाइश नहीं है।
