अप्रवृत्तौ च सीतायाः पापम् एव करिष्यति ।
तस्मात् क्षमम् इह अद्य एव गंतुम् प्रायोपविशनम् ॥४-५३-१५॥
apravṛttau ca sītāyāḥ pāpam eva kariṣyati |
tasmāt kṣamam iha adya eva gantum prāyopaviśanam ॥4-53-15॥
Translation
"In the absence of news regarding Sita, he will certainly commit a sin (by killing us). Therefore, it is capable (proper) for us to resort to fasting unto death right here and now."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"सीता का कोई समाचार न मिलने पर (अप्रवृत्तौ), वह (सुग्रीव) निश्चय ही पाप (हमारा वध) करेगा। इसलिए, आज और यहीं पर प्रायोपवेश (अनशन-व्रत) द्वारा परलोक जाना ही हमारे लिए उचित (क्षमम्) है।"
English Commentary
Angada connects the mission outcome directly to their fate. Apravṛttau refers to the lack of tidings or intelligence about Sita. He predicts that Sugriva will commit pāpam—here implying the harsh act of killing his own kinsmen/soldiers. By calling it "sin," Angada might be expressing his subjective feeling of injustice, or simply the horror of the act. The conclusion is decisive: adya eva (this very day), they should commence the fast unto death. This emphasizes that Angada sees no value in delaying the inevitable or begging for mercy. He prefers a dignified exit on his own terms.

अंगद यहाँ सुग्रीव के संभावित कार्य को 'पाप' (हत्या) की संज्ञा दे रहे हैं, यद्यपि राजा के रूप में दंड देना सुग्रीव का अधिकार है। अंगद के कहने का तात्पर्य है कि बिना सीता का पता लगाए लौटना, सुग्रीव को क्रोधित करेगा और वह क्रोध निर्दोष वानरों के वध का कारण बनेगा। 'अद्य एव' (आज ही) निर्णय लेने की बात अंगद की व्याकुलता को दर्शाती है। वे भविष्य की अनिश्चितता को समाप्त कर, तुरंत मृत्यु का वरण करना चाहते हैं। यहाँ मिशन की विफलता (सीता की खोज) और जीवन के अंत का सीधा संबंध स्थापित किया गया है।
