विन्ध्यस्य तु गिरेः पादे संप्रपुष्पित पादपे ।
उपविश्य महात्मानः चिन्ताम् आपेदिरे तदा ॥ ॥४-५३-३॥
vindhyasya tu gireḥ pāde saṃprapuṣpita pādape । upaviśya mahātmānaḥ cintām āpedire tadā ॥ ॥4-53-3॥
Translation
Then, sitting at the foot of the Vindhya mountain, where the trees were in full bloom, the high-souled ones fell into anxiety.

तब विन्ध्य पर्वत की तलहटी में, जहाँ वृक्ष फूलों से लदे हुए थे, वे महात्मा (वानर) बैठकर चिंता में डूब गए।
English Commentary
The juxtaposition in this verse is poignant. The Vanaras sit at the foot of the mountain amidst saṃprapuṣpita pādape (trees in full bloom). Usually a symbol of joy and life, the blooming trees here serve as a grim calendar, confirming the arrival of spring and the expiration of their allotted month. The mahātmānaḥ (noble ones) fall into cintām (deep anxiety/thought). The beauty of the surroundings mocks their dire situation, highlighting the psychological burden of leadership and duty failure.

वानर विन्ध्य की तलहटी ('पादे') में बैठते हैं। यहाँ प्रकृति का सौंदर्य उनके दुख के विपरीत खड़ा है। वृक्ष 'संप्रपुष्पित' (फूलों से लदे हुए) हैं, जो वसंत ऋतु का संकेत है। वसंत का आगमन यह सिद्ध करता है कि समय बीत चुका है। बाहरी सुंदरता उनके आंतरिक विषाद ('चिन्ताम् आपेदिरे') को और बढ़ा रही है। वे 'महात्मानः' (महान आत्मा वाले) हैं, अर्थात वे कायर नहीं हैं, लेकिन कर्तव्य भंग की ग्लानि और परिणाम का भय उन्हें चिंताग्रस्त कर रहा है।
