न क्षमम् च अपराद्धानाम् गमनम् स्वामि पार्श्वतः ।
प्रधानबूताः च वयम् सुग्रीवस्य समागताः ॥४-५३-२३॥
na kṣamam ca aparāddhānām gamanam svāmi pārśvataḥ |
pradhānabūtāḥ ca vayam sugrīvasya samāgatāḥ ॥4-53-23॥
Translation
"It is not capable (safe/proper) for offenders to go near the Master. Moreover, we who have come here are the principal figures belonging to Sugriva."

"अपराध करने के बाद स्वामी के पास जाना उचित (सुरक्षित) नहीं है। और हम लोग जो यहाँ आए हैं, वे सुग्रीव के प्रमुख (मुख्य) सेवक हैं।"
English Commentary
The Vanaras articulate a principle of survival: aparāddhānām (for the guilty/offenders), approaching the master is perilous. Their status as pradhānabūtāḥ (principal/chief ones) acts against them. In ancient military codes, leaders bear the brunt of failure. They realize that as the elite corps entrusted with the most crucial direction (South), they cannot plead ignorance or weakness. Being the "best" makes their failure "worst" in the King's eyes. Thus, their high rank ensures that they will be made examples of, rather than forgiven.

वानर यहाँ एक व्यावहारिक नीति का उल्लेख करते हैं: अपराधी को राजा के सामने स्वेच्छा से प्रस्तुत नहीं होना चाहिए। विशेष रूप से वे जो 'प्रधानभूताः' (मुख्य/वरिष्ठ) हैं। साधारण सैनिकों को शायद क्षमा मिल भी जाए, लेकिन नेतृत्व करने वालों (Leadership) को विफलता की जिम्मेदारी लेनी पड़ती है। वे जानते हैं कि सुग्रीव उनसे उच्च मानकों की अपेक्षा करते हैं। ऊँचा पद अधिक खतरे का कारण बन गया है। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि वे विद्रोही नहीं बनना चाहते थे, लेकिन आत्मरक्षा की वृत्ति उन्हें लौटने से रोक रही है।
