इह एव सीताम् अन्वीक्ष्य प्रवृत्तिम् उपलभ्य वा ।
नः चेत् गच्छाम तम् वीरम् गमिष्यामो यम क्षयम् ॥४-५३-२४॥
iha eva sītām anvīkṣya pravṛttim upalabhya vā |
naḥ cet gacchāma tam vīram gamiṣyāmo yama kṣayam ॥4-53-24॥
Translation
"Remaining right here, we shall search for Sita or obtain news of her. If we do not go to that hero (with news), we shall go to the abode of Yama (Death)."

"यहीं रहकर सीता की खोज करेंगे या उनकी कोई खबर प्राप्त करेंगे। यदि हम उस वीर (राम/सुग्रीव) के पास (सफलता के साथ) नहीं जा सकते, तो हम यमलोक चले जाएँगे।"
English Commentary
The troop draws a hard line. The plan is to continue the search iha eva (right here/from this location) indefinitely. The ultimatum is binary: either obtain intelligence (pravṛttim) on Sita and return victorious, or accept death (yama kṣayam). The phrase gacchāma tam vīram likely refers to returning to the hero (Rama or Sugriva) with the mission accomplished. They refuse to return with anything less. This shows that they have not abandoned the mission itself, but they have abandoned the chain of command that demands a timely return regardless of results.

यहाँ वानर दो ही विकल्प देखते हैं: 'करो या मरो'। वे कहते हैं कि वे अब जंगल में ही रहकर सीता को ढूँढेंगे। यदि सीता मिल गईं, तभी लौटना संभव है। 'नः चेत्' (यदि नहीं), तो वे 'यम क्षयम्' (मृत्यु के घर) जाना पसंद करेंगे, लेकिन खाली हाथ किष्किन्धा नहीं लौटेंगे। यह संकल्प उनकी निष्ठा को भी दर्शाता है—वे अभी भी सीता को ढूँढना चाहते हैं, लेकिन वे सुग्रीव के भय के कारण वापस जाकर रिपोर्ट नहीं कर सकते। वे वन में ही रहकर प्रयास जारी रखने या मरने का निर्णय लेते हैं।
