ते वसंतम् अनुप्राप्तम् प्रतिवेद्य परस्परम् ।
नष्ट संदेश काल अर्था निपेतुर् धरणी तले ॥४-५३-५॥
te vasantam anuprāptam prativedya parasparam |
naṣṭa saṃdeśa kāla arthā nipetur dharaṇī tale ॥4-53-5॥
Translation
Perceiving that the spring season had arrived and communicating to one another that the time-limit fixed for the mission had expired without the object being achieved, those monkeys fell down on the surface of the earth.

वे (वानर) वसंत ऋतु का आगमन देखकर और एक-दूसरे को यह बताकर कि राजा सुग्रीव द्वारा निर्धारित अवधि (संदेश काल) व्यतीत हो चुकी है और कार्य सिद्ध नहीं हुआ है, अत्यंत दुखी होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े।
English Commentary
This verse captures the moment of realization and the subsequent collective despair of the Vanara search party. Having emerged from the dark, enchanting cave of Swayamprabha where time flowed imperceptibly, the sudden sight of the blooming spring season serves as a jarring clock, informing them that their deadline is long past. The phrase naṣṭa saṃdeśa kāla arthā signifies that the period allotted for the royal command has perished without result. The physical act of falling to the ground illustrates the psychological crushing weight of failure and the terror of King Sugriva’s retribution. It highlights the strict discipline within the Vanara hierarchy where failure to adhere to a timeline was seen as a catastrophic breach of duty.
