स्वल्पम् हि कृतम् इन्द्रेण क्षिपता हि अशनिम् पुरा ।
लक्ष्मणो निशितैः बाणैः भिन्द्यात् पत्र पुटम् यथा ॥ ॥४-५४-१४॥
Svalpam hi kṛtam indreṇa kṣipatā hi aśanim purā । Lakṣmaṇo niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ bhindyāt patra puṭam yathā ॥ ॥4-54-14॥
Translation
In ancient times, the destruction caused by Indra hurling his thunderbolt (Vajra) was indeed minimal compared to what Lakshmana can do. With his sharp arrows, Lakshmana can tear this mountain apart just as easily as one tears a cup made of leaves.
हिंदी अनुवाद
प्राचीन काल में वज्र चलाने वाले देवराज इन्द्र ने पर्वतों का जो हाल किया था, वह तो बहुत थोड़ा था; किन्तु लक्ष्मण अपने तीखे बाणों से इस पर्वत को पत्तों के दोने की भाँति विदीर्ण कर डालेंगे।
English Commentary
Here, Hanuman employs the strategy of 'Danda' (threat/force) mixed with 'Bheda' (dissension/fear) to dissuade Angada from rebellion. He emphasizes the futility of relying on the mountain cave for protection against the wrath of Lakshmana. By comparing Lakshmana’s prowess favorably against Indra’s Vajra (thunderbolt), Hanuman elevates the threat level appropriately for a warrior of Angada's stature. The metaphor of tearing the mountain like a "leaf cup" (patra puṭam) highlights the terrifying ease with which Lakshmana operates. The commentary suggests that physical barriers are meaningless against the divine weaponry of the Ikshvaku princes, urging Angada to abandon thoughts of establishing a breakaway kingdom.

हनुमान जी यहाँ 'भेद' और 'दंड' नीति का प्रयोग करते हुए अंगद के मन में लक्ष्मण के प्रति भय उत्पन्न कर रहे हैं। उनका उद्देश्य अंगद को यह समझाना है कि जिस गुफा या पर्वत को वे सुरक्षित दुर्ग मानकर विद्रोह करने की सोच रहे हैं, वह रघुकुल के वीरों के आगे तिनके के समान है। हनुमान जी तुलना करते हैं कि इन्द्र का वज्र भी पर्वतों को काटने में उतना सक्षम नहीं था जितना लक्ष्मण के बाण हैं। 'पत्र पुटम् यथा' (पत्ते के दोने की तरह) का उपमा-प्रयोग लक्ष्मण की संहारक शक्ति और पर्वत की तुच्छता को दर्शाता है। यह कथन अंगद को यह अहसास दिलाने के लिए है कि सुग्रीव से विद्रोह करके कहीं भी छिपना असंभव है।
