धर्म राजः पितृव्यः ते प्रीति कामो दृढ व्रतः ।
शुचिः सत्य प्रतिज्ञः च स त्वाम् जातु न नाशयेत् ॥ ॥४-५४-२१॥
Dharma rājaḥ pitṛvyaḥ te prīti kāmo dṛḍha vrataḥ । Śuciḥ satya pratijñaḥ ca sa tvām jātu na nāśayet ॥ ॥4-54-21॥
Translation
Your uncle is a righteous king, he desires your love/welfare, is firm in his vows, pure in conduct, and true to his promise. He will never destroy you.

तुम्हारे चाचा (सुग्रीव) धर्म का पालन करने वाले राजा हैं, वे तुमसे प्रेम करते हैं, वे अपने व्रत में दृढ़ हैं, पवित्र आचरण वाले और सत्यप्रतिज्ञ हैं। वे तुम्हारा नाश कभी नहीं करेंगे।
English Commentary
Hanuman actively works to rehabilitate Sugriva's image in Angada's mind. Angada fears execution, but Hanuman counters this by listing Sugriva's virtues: righteous (dharma rājaḥ), affectionate (prīti kāmo), and pure (śuciḥ). The commentary notes that Hanuman is appealing to Sugriva’s adherence to oaths (satya pratijñaḥ). Since Sugriva promised to care for Vali’s family and installed Angada as Yuvaraja, he is bound by his word to protect him. This reassurance is vital to convince Angada that returning is not a suicide mission but a return to a benevolent guardian.

यहाँ हनुमान जी सुग्रीव के चरित्र (Character Certificate) का वर्णन कर रहे हैं ताकि अंगद का डर दूर हो सके। अंगद को लगता है कि सुग्रीव क्रूर हैं, लेकिन हनुमान उन्हें 'धर्मराज', 'शुचि' (पवित्र), और 'सत्यप्रतिज्ञ' बताते हैं। हनुमान जी याद दिला रहे हैं कि सुग्रीव ने राम के समक्ष अंगद को युवराज बनाने का वचन दिया था, और 'दृढ व्रतः' होने के कारण वे उस वचन को नहीं तोड़ेंगे। यह सुग्रीव की छवि को सुधारने (image reconstruction) का प्रयास है। हनुमान जी तर्क देते हैं कि सुग्रीव व्यक्तिगत द्वेष से ऊपर उठकर राजधर्म का पालन करेंगे।
