तत् असुखम् अनुकीर्तितम् वचोभुवि पतितान् च निरीक्ष्य वानरान् ।
भृश चकित मतिः महामतिः कृपणम् उदाहृतवान् स गृध्रराजः ॥ ॥४-५६-१७॥
Tat asukham anukīrtitam vacobhuvi patitān ca nirīkṣya vānarān । Bhṛśa cakita matiḥ mahāmatiḥ Kṛpaṇam udāhṛtavān sa gṛdhrarājaḥ ॥ ॥4-56-17॥
Translation
Hearing those unpleasant words regarding the death of Jatayu, and observing the Vanaras lying on the ground, that high-minded King of Vultures (Sampati), greatly startled, spoke in a piteous tone.

उस दुखद वचन (जटायु की मृत्यु के समाचार) को सुनकर और वानरों को भूमि पर पड़े हुए देखकर, वह महाबुद्धिमान गृध्रराज (संपाती) अत्यंत चकित हुआ और करुणापूर्ण वाणी में बोला।
English Commentary
This verse captures the immediate emotional impact on Sampati. Despite being a vulture, often associated with cruelty, Valmiki describes him as mahamatih (high-minded or wise). The phrase asukham anukirtitam refers to the painful news of Jatayu's death uttered by Angada. Sampati is startled (chakita mati) rather than aggressive. His reaction establishes a mood of pathos. Seeing the Vanaras in despair on the ground and hearing of his brother's demise bridges the gap between the two species through shared grief. It sets the stage for Sampati's transformation from a potential threat into a crucial ally.
